The Bureau of Public Safety Director Cary Levitre has appointed the 5th Acting Director of the Bureau of Public Safety, Lt. John Gabriel, to cover during his now going on four-month medical leave.

Since his departure on July 29th, there have been four acting director appointees, three appointed by Levitre and one appointed by Minister of Justice and Vice President Uduch Sengebau-Senior.  Levitre had appointed BPS Administrative Officer Valerie Ikesakes, Chief of Patrol Flavian Ngiramengior, Acting Chief of Marine Law Enforcement Rickley Antonio, and now, Lt. John Gabriel of the Criminal Investigation Division.

Director Levitre, who was hired in April of this year, worked until July and left for the States for medical reasons.  While away from the country, he has been appointing personnel from different divisions to serve the position of BPS acting director.

The appointment of Lt. Gabriel is only for 12 days, from November 29 to December 10th.  It is unclear why the appointment is for 12 days but it may be that  Levitre is returning by that date.  As of November 29, Levitre would have been gone from the Bureau of Public Safety for four (4) months.

President Surangel Whipps Jr. had supported Levitre’s decision to appoint acting directors saying that it provides a good opportunity for those appointed to improve themselves.
