Overview:

What if the key to a stronger Palau isn’t found in one big solution — but in the small choices we make every day? In this heartfelt letter, Tutii Chilton shares 25 simple reminders for healthier living, grounded in movement, faith, gratitude and community. From walking with joy to forgiving freely, these daily habits form a powerful “recipe for resilience” for families across Palau.

Dear Editor,

Health is not found in one big change, but in many small, daily choices. In Palau, we can strengthen our bodies, minds, spirit and communities by following a simple recipe for life. These 25 steps are not rules, they are reminders of what we already know that joy, faith, and connection are medicine.

Movement and Mindfulness

  1. Take a 10–30 minute walk each day and smile as you walk. Movement and joy are the ultimate anti-depressants.
  2. Sit in silence for 10 minutes daily. Talk to God, reflect, and listen to the ocean.
  3. Begin each morning with purpose: “My purpose today is ___. I am thankful for ___.”

Food as Medicine

  1. Eat more foods that grow on trees and plants, and less food manufactured in plants.
  2. Drink green tea and plenty of water. Choose local fruits, fish, vegetables, and nuts.
  3. Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, and dinner like a peasant.

Relationships and Community

  1. Make at least three people smile each day.
  2. Don’t waste energy on gossip or negativity; invest in the present moment.
  3. Remember: your job won’t care for you when you are sick, but your friends will. Stay connected.

Perspective and Faith

  1. Life isn’t fair, but it’s still good.
  2. Life is too short to waste on hate.
  3. Don’t take yourself too seriously. No one else does.
  4. You are not so important that you have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.
  5. Make peace with your past. So it won’t spoil the present.
  6. Don’t compare your life to others. You have no idea what their journey is all about.
  7. No one is in charge of your happiness except you.
  8. Frame disasters with: “In five years, will this matter?”
  9. Forgive everyone for everything.
  10. What others think of you is none of your business.
  11. God heals everything — but you must ask Him.
  12. However good or bad a situation is, it will change.

Gratitude and Blessings

  1. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need.
  2. Each night, say: “I am thankful for ___. Today I accomplished ___.”
  3. Remember: you are too blessed to be stressed.
  4. When you feel down, list your blessings until you smile.

A Call for Palau

These steps are simple, but together they form a recipe for resilience. When families, schools, and communities practice them daily, Palau can grow healthier and more self-sufficient. A healthy individual is the foundation of a healthy community, and a healthy community is the foundation of a strong Palau.
