British Ambassador to the Philippines and Palau, Laure Beaufils, paid her first official visit to Palau 12-14 October.
While in Palau, Ambassador Beaufils met Vice President Uduch, Minister of State Aitaro, and representatives from the Senate and House of Delegates.
These meetings enabled the Ambassador to listen to Palau’s plans for post-pandemic economic recovery and tourism. She also discussed the UK’s regional programmes on climate change, maritime and security issues, and anti-corruption.
She was able to meet non-government and civil society organisations across Palau covering issues such as biodiversity and conservation, gender rights, youth involvement and inclusion.
The Ambassador was joined by British Embassy colleagues who used the visit to encourage Palauans to apply to the UK Government scholarship, Chevening. The scholarship, awarded to individuals who demonstrate the commitment and skills to create change, offers full financial support for future leaders to study for any eligible master’s degree at any UK university, whilst also gaining access to a wide range of exclusive academic, professional, and cultural experiences. Applications can be submitted through chevening.org/apply and are open until 1 November 2022.
Speaking at the end of her visit Ambassador Beaufils said:
“I was absolutely delighted to visit Palau for the first time last week. The UK and Palau are close friends and allies that share a long history and a common vision for a world that is just, free, prosperous, and sustainable. I came home with a deep sense of opportunity – for all that we can do together. I am excited about to work together with Palau in the coming years and am determined to use my time as Ambassador to make a real change in areas of mutual interest. Ke kmal mesaul and see you soon.
On Chevening scholarships:
“If you are passionate about driving change, locally or globally; if you want to be the best at what you do; and if you have the imagination to inspire others, then a Chevening masters’ “scholarship could be the perfect opportunity for you. If you think you have what it takes to be a Chevening Scholar, please do apply before the 1 November deadline. We want more Chevening scholars from Palau. Chevening will fund travel, tuition and stipend for our successful scholars!”
