Asahi Baseball Field will soon be undergoing a $500k facelift, funded by a donation from the Nippon Foundation of Japan.
The site was originally planned as the venue for the Our Oceans 2020 Conference, but the government ultimately changed the venue to the Palau National Gym. As a result, the planned modifications for Asahi Ballfield were ditched.
The Nippon Foundation of Japan, one of the benefactors of the Our Oceans Conference, decided to fund the renovations of the Asahi Ballfield anyway, as a gift to Palau.
President Remengesau, during the press conference this week, expressed his appreciation to the Nippon Foundation of Japan for their partnership and friendship.
The renovations will include restoration of the parking-lot, the roofing, the stands, the press-box, the scoreboard, and the field, as well as improvements to the electrical equipment and the pipelines.
Neco Construction has been commissioned to complete the improvement project by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), which is implementing the various grants for Our Oceans 2020. The renovations are set to finish in December, when representatives of the Nippon Foundation are scheduled to visit Palau for Our Oceans.
A brief commencement ceremony for the project was held at the Palau Civics Center on Wednesday, September 16, where Ms. NgedikesOlaiUludong, Representative of Palau to the United Nations, presented the project details in the presence of President Tommy E. Remengesau and representatives from Neco Construction.
President Remengesau remarked that baseball is Palau’s most popular sport, and asked Neco Construction to “spare no expense”.
“Contract work is one thing, but doing it for Palau is another,” the President said. He went on to ask Neco to not “just think about profits but think about your product.”
“Make this something that Palau, Neco, and our donors can all be proud of,” he said.
The baseball field improvement is set to be the last project to be finished for Our Oceans 2020
