Under a recent grant from the New Zealand Government, the Cleared Ground Demining team was called out to an emergency task in Airai after farmers reported a suspicious item next to recently developed vegetable plots.
The team was immediately deployed from Peleliu and upon arrival, discovered that the item was a Japanese sea mine which contains 48lbs of explosive.
The team then conducted investigation of the surrounding area and discovered another mine in the nearby waterway. The sea mine in the waterway was leaking explosives into the water with only approximately half of the explosives remaining. (PR)
