27 MARCH 2023- Dr Petra Mahy arrived in Palau under the Australian Volunteers Program in March 2023 to support the Office of the Vice President / Ministry of Justice as a legal adviser.

Dr Mahy has been a law lecturer and a researcher for 13 years. She brings extensive knowledge and technical skills in the areas of comparative law and regulatory governance. As a qualified anthropologist, she is also experienced in designing research on how legal and other regulatory systems work in practice.

“When I saw this assignment with Australia Volunteers, I knew it was perfect, as it gives me the opportunity to take my existing skills and put them to practical use in a place where they will be useful and valued. Being a volunteer also offers the chance to explore a new part of the world, learn about the local way of life and have some adventures,” said Dr Mahy.

Dr Mahy hopes that her research and legal skills will contribute to the legal development in Palau in various ways, having a lasting positive impact.
