Two and half years after COVID-19 devastated Palau’s economy,  the 2022 Economic Symposium convenes under the theme, “Progressing Resiliency Through Sustainable Pathways,” bringing to the table academia and industry experts to discuss reforms and initiatives moving the country forward.

The COVID-19 pandemic’s impact on Palau as well as the rest of the world have set economies and development in the Pacific countries back to 2016 levels. 

The symposium aims to provide diagnosis of the Palau’s current situation and discuss ongoing reforms and initiatives such as tax reform, tourism recovery and investment opportunities, according to information from the Ministry of Finance.

The 17th Economic Symposium event will feature the launching of  the United Nations Development Program (UNDP)’s 2022 Human Development Report and its theme – Uncertain times, Unsettled lives: shaping our future in a Transforming world. This will be the first time the Human Development Report is launched from Palau. 

The report goes beyond “purely income measures,” and placing people at the center of development process characterized by “provision of choices and freedoms”, reporting on the status of Palau and other Pacific island countries.

The event is this Thursday, November 17, 2022 at the Ngarachamayong Cultural Center, from 8am to 5pm.  (By: L.N. Reklai)
