KOROR, Palau — An inmate who escaped from custody late last month has been recaptured, but the incident has renewed public concern over safety and security inside Palau’s correctional facilities, particularly in light of other recent incidents, including the death of an inmate who was allegedly set on fire.

Minister of Justice Jennifer Olegeriil confirmed during a press conference that Christopher Corona, who fled custody between 10 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. on Dec. 28, was apprehended on Dec. 30 in the mid-afternoon and is now back in custody.

Olegeriil said authorities have opened a separate case related to the escape and that investigations extend beyond Corona himself.

“There are cases being compiled for his escape and for persons we have identified who aided and abetted,” Olegeriil said.

The escape and subsequent recapture have intensified community unease about conditions inside the Bureau of Public Safety facilities. Residents say the incident has heightened fears not only about public safety, but also about the well-being of inmates and correctional officers.

A community member identified as “Rosie” said the escape has raised broader questions about institutional safety and oversight.

“When something like this happens, it makes the community worry about the safety of everyone inside the jail, including other inmates and the officers who work there,” she said. “It seems MOJ has been gifted many food supplies in the last three months. I hope food is not a problem.”

Another resident said escapes can erode public confidence in the justice system.

“We expect correctional facilities to be secure, and when an escape happens, it raises questions about whether enough safeguards are in place to protect people who are in custody,” he said.

The concerns come amid heightened scrutiny of Palau’s correctional system following a recent inmate death that authorities are investigating after allegations the inmate was set on fire. While officials have not publicly linked the incidents, community members say the combination of events has amplified calls for accountability, transparency and reforms within the correctional system.

Investigations into Corona’s escape and those suspected of assisting him remain ongoing, the Ministry of Justice said.
