The Palau Visitors Authority announced that tonight’s night market dubbed as the Forever Young Night Market will feature Ngirchoureng, a duo who will perform recreations of old-school sounds from the 1960’s, and highlight Palauan songs from the 1920’s through 1950’s with guitar and mandolin. Ngirchoureng’s Jim Geselbracht, a former Peace Corps Volunteer to Palau during the 1960’s, has also recently worked with the Belau National Museum to restore old reel to reel tapes for Ngerel Belau which included recordings of string band days in the 1950’s and 1960’s.

Ngerchoureng can be found on youtube, https://youtu.be/lgeHdIVweqE, and Geselbracht’s blog https://ouchacha.wordpress.com/, also documents many old songs and stories about Palau and the people he has met here.

The Night Market, which will run from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Ernguul Central Park, will also feature regular night market vendors and cultural demonstrations by Joseph-Lee Mad (carver), Amanda Yukiwo (weaver), and Ngara Ubeng (coconut husking).

Live band music will also be provided by Opi, Sheldon & Malo. Entertainment for the evening includes traditional and contemporary dance performances by the Bonitaz Dancers. The Malii Stars will perform a contemporary dance and the Ngiwal Male Dance group will perform the traditional men’s dance.

The top three winners from the March 15th Youth Day Singing Contest will also perform. [/ [restrict]
