Japan Ambassador to Palau Toshiyuki Yamada and Ngchesar State Governor Florencio Adelbai had signed on December 6 the grant contract for “The Project for Procurement of Equipment for Improving Rainwater Drainage System in Ngchesar State” to be implemented through the $88,950-grant from Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Project (GGP).
The signing ceremony was held at the Embassy of Japan and witnessed by Chief of Staff Secilil Eldebechel and Ngchesar State Government personnel.
As rainwater overflows from temporary ditches and catchment of unpaved roads, people in Ngchesar are often forced to travel slowly and carefully, especially after heavy rain. Even after the roads are paved to improve access for people, it can be easily cracked and damaged by rainwater runoff unless proper drainage systems are installed and maintained. Moreover, sediment and erosion will eventually cause negative impact to taro patches and mangroves as well as to ocean eco-system including corals.
In light of this, the Embassy of Japan decided to grant a dump truck and motor grader to improve rainwater drainage system in Ngchesar State. Procurement of new equipment will contribute to the state government’s project to make proper ditches and water exits as well as to maintain them regularly.
In his remarks at the ceremony, Ambassador Yamada expressed his hope that the implementation of this project would lead to further development of Ngchesar State and its residents.
The Government of Japan launched GGP in 1999, for the purpose of responding to various development needs engaged in grassroots activities in Palau. As of December 6, 2018, the Embassy has signed 73 grant contracts with schools and hospitals as well as state governments and non-profit organizations. Education, health care and environment are the primary fields prioritized by Japan for GGP in order to contribute to sustainable development of Palau.
