December 27- President Tommy E. Remengesau, Jr. and First Lady Debbie departed to Yokohama, Japan today to attend the 2019-2020 Japan-Palau Goodwill Yacht Race events to be held at the Yokohama port from December 28-29, 2019.

The Inaugural Japan-Palau Goodwill Yacht Race events are held in celebration of Palau and Japan’s 25th anniversary of diplomatic relations. The sailing events in Yokohama bay will include the Youths’ Friendship dinghy Race on December 28 which six youths – Joshua James Maido, Nene Seberongel Ruluked, Momilani Isikl Polloi, Linzy Moky Allen, Imogen Oriana Gaia Pinkney-Baird, and Travis Dui Sakurai from Palau will compete.

On December 29, the seven ocean going racers of the Japan-Palau Goodwill Yacht Race will set sail from Yokohama port aiming for Palau. The teams will sail as far away as 1,726 nautical miles (about 3,196 km) to Palau and are due in two weeks time. Team Palau is the vessel “Minnie”.

The racers journey to Palau will include a special program called “Sailing Towards a Plastic-Free Ocean” where JAMSTEC (Japan National Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology) will collect ocean samples to collect data on microplastics in the ocean. This project will be performed aboard the Miraie from Yokohama to Palau. The six youths from Palau will be participating in this research  on board the Miraie.
