On August 19, the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force destroyer JS Ariake held an onboard ceremony to celebrate the 30th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Japan and Palau, bringing together key officials from Palau and representatives of Japan to reinforce the longstanding friendship and collaborative efforts. The event served not only as a symbol of goodwill but also as a platform to discuss regional security and cooperation.
The ceremony was attended by several high-ranking Palauan officials, including Honorable Minister of State Gustav N. Aitaro, Honorable Vice President of the Senate Kerai Mariur, Honorable Floor Leader of the House of Delegates Gibson Kanai, National Security Coordinator Jennifer Anson, Acting Director of Public Safety Temdik Ngirblekuu, Lt. Commander of the Palau Patrol Vessel Kedam, Mace Ngirmeriil, and Lt. Commander of the Palau Patrol Vessel Remeliik II, Allison Baiei.
In the ceremony, Ambassador ORIKASA Hiroyuki addressed the gathering, emphasizing the significance of JS Ariake’s visit. Ambassador remarked that the visit not only strengthens the enduring friendship between Japan and Palau but also stresses the joint efforts to ensure peace and stability within the region. “Presence is deterrence,” he noted, highlighting the critical role of maintaining a visible and cooperative presence in Palau and this region.
Minister Aitaro expressed Palau’s deep appreciation for Japan’s continuous support, particularly in combating illegal activities and bolstering regional peace initiatives. Minister acknowledged the important partnership between the two nations in maintaining security and promoting prosperity across the region.
