(Koror, Palau) To mark the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and Palau, Japan hosted a special Cultural Week featuring a variety of activities.

While Cultural Week is an annual event, this year’s edition held particular significance. Judo masters, a kimono instructor, and a mural artist all traveled from Japan to participate in demonstrations, school visits, and even community projects.

Judo Masters Promote Healthy Habits and Discipline

Judo masters Udaka Nae and Yuka Watanabe, both renowned champions with international Judo awards, visited schools across Palau. Their demonstrations aimed to raise awareness of judo as a beneficial form of exercise that promotes both physical activity and self-discipline. They departed Palau on July 19th. In a press interview on July 16th, they mentioned plans to meet with the Palau Judo Federation.

Kimono Instructor Shares History and Art of Traditional Dress

Yuko Nakajima, a kimono instructor invited by the Japanese embassy in Palau, visited schools throughout the week. Her presentations showcased the history and artistry of kimono attire, with visits extending as far as Angaur Elementary School.

Mural Artist Creates Collaborative Artwork at Airport

Miyazaki Keisuke, a traveling muralist whose work graces locations across Africa, Latin America, and Ukraine, is creating a large mural at Palau International Airport as part of the celebratory activities. “I always collaborate with local children,” Miyazaki said in an interview. Students from local schools are assisting him in completing the artwork. Palau will be the eighth country to feature his art.

Miyazaki arrived on July 3rd and remains on the island to finalize the piece. He anticipates finishing the mural on July 25th, with an unveiling ceremony planned for the 29th.  (By: Olkeriil Eoghan Ngirudelsang)
