CANBERRA, 16 APRIL 2018 (THE AUSTRALIAN) — Australia’s new Chief of Defence is a former Special Forces commander who played a key role in the United Nations operation to restore order in East Timor and boasts political experience having served as a national security adviser.
The Australian understands Current Chief of Army Lieutenant General Angus Campbell will be announced as the new chief of defence by Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull later today.
The fit former Special Air Service Regiment officer boasts an unique resume having served in a variety of roles ranging from commanding the 2nd Battalion of the Royal Australian Regiment during East Timor operations to acting as an adviser to the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet to heading up the Coalition’s Operation Sovereign Borders Taskforce.
Military sources have also tipped Chief of Navy David Johnston to be announced as Vice Chief of Defence.
