KOROR, Palau (Aug. 26, 2025) — A store in Ngiwal was robbed last week by a masked person(s), marking another incident in a series of growing armed robberies across Babeldaob.
Police Director Elobt confirmed the robbery but said details cannot be shared yet because the investigation is still ongoing. Authorities promised to release more information once the case progresses.
This latest robbery adds to a troubling trend. In May, two armed robberies were reported against the same person, with witnesses present. Since then, there have been mentions of similar incidents in public forums, but police have neither confirmed nor denied these reports. So far, no suspects have been charged in any of the cases.
Many residents say they are worried but hesitant to come forward. Some fear the hassle of reporting crimes or dealing with police, while others worry about getting involved in a small community. “This is a small place. People know who these guys are, but they don’t want to be involved in any way,” one resident said.
Community members also say police could be doing more to use public assistance to solve cases. Without engaging the community or sharing critical information, authorities may be missing opportunities to catch suspects. “With no updates, the public can’t help with tips or leads,” a resident said.
Some point to drug use as a factor driving crime. “It’s drugs pushing people to do this,” said an employee of a Babeldaob state government.
Police are preparing the latest crime report, which will be shared soon. Officials say that solving these robberies will require cooperation between law enforcement and the community—but many residents need to be convinced that coming forward is worthwhile.
