Overview:

National Football League Flag football clinics are gaining momentum across Fiji as organizers work toward an ambitious goal: fielding a national team at the 2028 Summer Olympics. With support from the NFL, local officials say the program is helping introduce young athletes to a new sport while opening pathways to scholarships, international competition and potentially professional careers.

SUVA, 04 MARCH 2026 (FIJI SUN)—The NFL (National Football League) Flag have been conducting clinics with numerous schools around the country with a goal to have a team participating at the Los Angeles Olympic Games 2028.

Speaking to SUNsports, Fiji American Football Federation president Lawrence (Law) Raman said the ultimate goal is to have an Olympic team representing Fiji at the 2028 Olympics.

“The biggest goal is just to have these kids active, exercising, playing a new sport and learning a new sport,” he said.

“It’s removing the barriers of equipment, which the NFL is helping us a lot with.”

Raman added that they have a good support system and it’s just a matter of getting the word out that this sport exists and to get more kids involved.

He highlighted that the sport could make millions of dollars for boys who are interested.

“For boys, they can make millions and millions of dollars and there’s nobody in this world that’s more athletic than the Fijians. If you have a chance to go to the NFL and play tackle football go for it,” he said.

“I think there’s plenty of space for both sports. Rugby is the top dog, and we don’t want to take away from them at all. We just want to offer another sport that more people can play.”

Raman emphasised that NFL Flag can provide opportunities such as scholarships.

“For girls, you can have a scholarship to the U.S. and get free education, free everything,” he said.

Raman said the NFL is helping us a lot. So, we’re super blessed to be able to give this opportunity to the people of Fiji….PACNEWS
