The Bureau of Immigration and Labor is conducting its periodic review of Non-residents work permits. As a result of this work, there are about 150 expired work permits that need to be brought into compliance.

“There are various reasons why an expired work permit is pending process at Labor Office. Common reasons for expired permits include the oversight of an employer to request renewal and failure to pay the fees to renew expired permits. According to Labor Laws, an employer must have a need for the foreign worker, provide complete application and pay permit fee before issuance of a valid work permit. Palau laws require a foreigner to have a valid status to remain in Palau and so an expired work permit makes a foreigner subject to a return to his/her home country.”, said Acting Director Silverius Tellei.

In year 2017 the Division of Labor issued about 5,127 work permits to foreigners staying in Palau for employment purpose. These work permits are issued for up to two-year term and must be requested to be renewed at least 45 working days before expiration date. Noncompliance to labor requirements may result in enforcement action against employer and employee including the cancellation of a work permit and issuance of civil penalty.

The Division of Labor office is open to help employers comply with the requirements.
