KOROR, Palau – Government offices and schools across Palau closed Friday in observance of Youth Day, a national holiday dedicated to celebrating and empowering young people. Various activities were organized throughout the country, ranging from sports tournaments to environmental cleanups.

In Koror, the state government kicked off the day with a walkathon at 4 a.m., followed by a welcoming ceremony, dance performances, and a day market at Long Island Park.

Ngiwal State organized environmental initiatives, including clearing invasive Kebeas vine and a community trash walk-and-pick activity. Sports tournaments are scheduled for Saturday, with lunch provided for participants.

Ngaraard State is hosting coastal cleanups at Kuabes Park, followed by lunch and games, with prizes for youth participants. Ngeremlengui will hold sports competitions over the weekend, while Melekeok and Ngarchelong will celebrate Youth Day on Saturday with games, lunch, and live entertainment.

Although other states are also marking the occasion, only those listed had official event flyers disseminated by the Ministry of Human Resources, Culture, Tourism, and Development, which oversees the Division of Youth and Career Development.

Youth Day is observed annually on March 15. It originated in Ngchesar State, which first established it as a public holiday by law. Ngchesar held the first official Youth Day celebration on March 28, 1986, before it was recognized as a national holiday. (By: Eoghan Olkeriil Ngirudelsang)
