A delegation from the Republic of Palau headed by Vice President and Minister of Justice Raynold B. Oilouch met with delegation from the United States of America headed by U.S. Ambassador for Palau Amy J. Hyatt for the 2018 Mid Joint Committee Meeting (JCM) on July 27, 2018.

The meeting was held at the headquarters of the Joint Region Marianas. As with previous JCMs, the meeting served as a platform for the two countries to continue joint discussions dealing with security and defense issues, as provided under Title III of the Amended Compact of Free Association.

Central theme to the welcoming remarks by Rear Admiral Shoshana Chatfield (Commander, Joint Region Marianas), Ambassador Hyatt, and Vice President Oilouch was the progressive and cooperative engagements that continue to exist between the two countries. Ambassador Hyatt took the opportunity to acknowledge and remember the Palauans who lost their lives while serving in the U.S. militaries.

The meeting agenda centered on implementation updates on action items agreed by both countries during the 2017 JCM, which the US hosted last year in Honolulu, Hawaii. Issues discussed in the meeting included the Defense of Palau, Maritime Domain Awareness/Maritime Security/Border Protection, Security Sector Institution Development, and all Hazards Response among others. Another objective of the meeting was for both sides to identify and consider other issues that merit discussions and decision in the next main JCM to be held during the latter part of this year. (PR)
