KOROR, Palau — President Surangel S. Whipps Jr. signed an executive order on Oct. 15 extending the mandate of Palau’s Coordinated Border Management (CBM) Working Group, which had been set to expire on Sept. 30. The CBM Working Group, established under Executive Order No. 475, will now continue its efforts to enhance coordination across government agencies tasked with securing Palau’s borders.

The CBM Working Group is dedicated to strengthening Palau’s border security by fostering interagency cooperation and streamlining policies, a mission seen as vital amid growing regional security concerns. With its renewed mandate, the CBM Working Group will continue working to modernize Palau’s border management systems, incorporating updated technologies and practices aimed at detecting and preventing illegal activities. Its priorities include combating transnational crime, human trafficking, and other cross-border threats.

Through ongoing facilitation, collaboration, and resource-sharing, the CBM Working Group has become an essential platform for agencies such as customs, immigration, and law enforcement to enhance security measures. Since its formation, the group has achieved critical advancements, including improved data-sharing systems and strengthened border monitoring protocols. These steps underscore Palau’s commitment to protecting its sovereignty and the safety of its citizens by addressing the complex challenges posed by illegal cross-border activities.

President Whipps highlighted the importance of the working group in sustaining Palau’s security infrastructure. “Through coordinated efforts and shared resources, the CBM Working Group continues to be indispensable in ensuring our borders remain safe and resilient against evolving threats,” Whipps stated.

The extension of the CBM Working Group’s term reflects the prioritization of robust and adaptable border management strategies as part of Palau’s national security framework.
