KOROR, Palau — Palau paid tribute to its past presidents on Presidents Day, June 1, 2025, as leaders and citizens gathered across the country to honor the nation’s former heads of state.
President Surangel Whipps Jr. led the commemorations by visiting the grave of the late President Kuniwo Nakamura in Peleliu, where he joined his family and the state government in laying the wreaths. In a short ceremony, President Whipps honored the former leaders for their vision, perseverance, and contributions to Palau’s development.
“Palau will always be grateful for their leadership, vision, and hard work, including their families, who provided the most crucial support,” Whipps said, reflecting on the challenges leaders faced during their time in office.
Palau, which has maintained a democratic government for 44 years, has had nine presidents. Of the eight past presidents, only Tommy E. Remengesau Jr. and Johnson Toribiong are still living. Other past presidents honored during the holiday include Haruo Remeliik, Alfonso Oiterong, Lazarus Salii, Thomas Remengesau Sr., and Ngiratkel Etpison.
The day of remembrance was marked by tributes in various states, led by national leaders. First Lady Valerie Whipps and Bureau of Domestic Affairs Director Eunice Akiwo laid wreaths in Ngaraard, Vice President Raynold Oilouch traveled to Angaur, and Minister Jennifer Olegeriil visited Aimeliik. Minister Ngiraibelas Tmetuchl, who joined constituents in Ngatpang, paid tribute to the late President Ngiratkel Etpison alongside his family and friends.
Presidents Day in Palau serves as an annual occasion to honor the leaders who shaped the nation’s path and to reflect on the sacrifices made by them and their families for the country’s future.
