President Tommy E. Remengesau, Jr. is in Tokyo, Japan to attend the 25th Anniversary celebrations of Palau’s Independence and formal establishment of diplomatic ties between both countries.

This year 2019 marks the 25th Anniversary of Palau’s Independence and the 25th Anniversary of its Diplomatic Relations with Japan.  Prime Minister of Japan, HE Shinzo Abe, and Honorary Palauan Citizen, Sasakawa Peace Foundation Chairman, Mr. Yohei Sasakawa will be attending a reception event co-hosted by Embassy of Palau on November 12.

“We are celebrating these milestone anniversaries of our nation’s birth and of our relations with Japan, based on the theme of “Peace and Friendship”, we will celebrate our over 100 years of history with Japan,” says Ambassador of Palau to Japan, Francis Matsutaro.

On November 11, President Remengesau delivered keynote remarks at the “International Symposium Commemorating the 25th Anniversary of Japan-Palau Diplomatic Relations- Achieving a Sustainable Ocean – Palau’s Initiatives and International Partnership,” a symposium organized by the Sasakawa Peace Foundation.

President Remengesau spoke at the symposium regarding Palau’s progressive ocean policies and actions, as well as the work carried out by the High-Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy, to which Prime Minister Shinzo Abe of Japan also participates as a member. President Remengesau also shared his aspiration for the forthcoming 7th Our Ocean Conference to be held in Palau August nest year.  In addition, State Minister Faustina K. Rehuher-Marugg of the Republic of Palau, and H.E. Francis M. Matsutaro, Ambassador of the Republic of Palau to Japan, will speak at the symposium’s panel discussion with Japanese stakeholders regarding ocean related activities in Palau and international partnership.

Joining President Remengesau’s delegation to Japan are Senator Frank Kyota, Delegate Jonathan Isechal, Governor Temmy Shmull, and Presidential Adviser, Donald Haruo. The delegation returns to Palau on November 13, 2019. (PR)
