The Rengul Uchei group on Sunday organized a BBQ lunch and a day of Pride month celebration honoring the LGBTQ community.
Rondy Ronny said the Pride Month is a celebration of acceptance and a plea for inclusion.
The group joins the global celebration of the Pride Month which pays homage to the Stonewall event in June 1969 in New York City, that started the modern gay rights movement.
“I think understanding each other is more important than differentiating us all based on our sexuality,” he said.
Untouched by COVID-19, the group was able to put together a BBQ lunch , volleyball games and beach clean up to honor the movement, amid other nations had to take their celebration virtually.
ElilaiSugiyama said the group wanted to show support to the movement and that Palau is also a safe place for the LGBTQ community.
She also thanked the people who joined the celebration mostly from the younger members of the community.
“We are so fortunate right now to live in a more modern time,” Sugiyama said.
In 2019, President Tommy Remengesau said he supported equal rights.
“There are those who may not fit to what we call the mainstream, but that doesn’t mean that they’re an outcast in society,” the President said last year. (B. Carreon)
