KOROR, Palau — That’s the fiery call from Syd, president of the Imeyuns Youth Movement and a key organizer of the third annual Youth Day Softball Tournament. Despite a dilapidated field that’s long been unsafe for play, the event draws eager youth for healthy competition and a stark anti-drug message: “Say No to Drugs and Choose Life.”

“Our softball field hasn’t been in the safest or most suitable condition for play for years,” Syd said. “But as organizers and youth leaders, we have never given up hope. Each year, we continue to do our best to make the tournament happen because we know how important sports are for our young people.”

Teamwork Triumphs Over Obstacles

The tournament embodies perseverance amid “limited and unsafe facilities,” Syd explained. “Instead of allowing that to stop us, we try to make the best use of what we have. This tournament represents resilience, determination, and the commitment of our youth to stay involved in positive community activities.”

Organizing has been “a roller coaster,” with doubters and scarce support, but the group pressed on. “When support was limited and some people doubted our efforts, we continued encouraging and uplifting one another,” Syd said. “That spirit of perseverance is exactly what we want our youth to experience and learn from.”

It builds essential skills: “Events like the Youth Day Softball Tournament create opportunities for young people to come together, support each other, and build strong teamwork,” Syd noted. “It teaches them that success does not come from one individual alone. As the saying goes, ‘There is no ‘I’ in team.’ Everyone must work together to achieve a common goal.”

Now, pursuing NGO status after two years of growth, the initiative grooms leaders. “Through these efforts, youth are learning leadership, responsibility, and the value of persistence,” Syd said.

Sparking a Drug-Free, Engaged Future

Syd hopes the event inspires lasting change. “Our greatest hope is that this tournament will inspire young people to stay active, remain drug-free, and never give up on their dreams,” Syd said. “Sports can play a powerful role in shaping positive lifestyles and building stronger communities.”

Youth voices deserve amplification, too. “As youth leaders, we want young people to understand that their voices matter,” Syd emphasized. “In some cases, cultural expectations may make youth feel that their opinions or contributions are less important because of their age. However, being young does not mean your ideas or leadership do not matter. Your presence and participation are valuable to your community and to the nation of Palau.”

And the bottom line? “Your voice matters, but even more important are the actions you take to create change. I encourage youth leaders everywhere to continue stepping forward, supporting one another, and working together for a better future,” Syd said.
