Overview:

Palauan women are redefining leadership on their own terms through Rooted & Rising, a new mentorship program launching this February. Grounded in culture, lived experience and community care, the initiative nurtures young women leaders by strengthening identity, confidence and purpose—amplifying the leadership already present in Palau rather than importing outside models.

Koror, Palau – In a region flooded with imported leadership playbooks, Palauan women are crafting their own: the Rooted & Rising Mentorship Program, set to empower young leaders starting February.

Palauan women are crafting their own: the Rooted & Rising Mentorship Program, set to empower young leaders starting February 2026.

It’s no cookie-cutter initiative. “Rooted & Rising is different because it is deeply grounded in place, culture and lived experience,” says Summer, the program’s  organizer. Co-designed by local women actively shaping their communities, it sidesteps external templates to emphasize relationships, values and shared stewardship. Leadership here thrives in the shadows of service, care and steady commitment—not flashy titles. “Mentorship is not one-directional; it is relational, reflective and rooted in who we are and where we come from,” Summer adds.

Mentees wrapping up in May will carry tangible shifts: unshakeable clarity and confidence in their leadership essence. They’ll nurture personal growth in identity, voice and emotional savvy, while honing professional tools like goal-setting, sharp communication and purposeful navigation of power spaces. It’s amplification, not reinvention. “The transformation is not about becoming someone new, but about becoming more grounded, more assured and more prepared to step into opportunities already within reach,” Summer explains.

Consider the woman quietly steering youth programs or community drives, blind to her own command. Rooted & Rising unveils that power through reflection and guidance from elders in the circle. She refines her strengths, ignites her purpose and surges forward—sparking projects, championing causes and converting unseen potential into bold, community-anchored action. “That shift often results in her taking on more intentional roles, initiating projects or advocating for others, turning quiet potential into visible, community-centered leadership,” Summer says.
