KOROR, Palau — President Surangel S. Whipps Jr. joined U.S. Ambassador Jessica C. Lee, national and state leaders, and residents of Echang on Tuesday to unveil Phase II improvements to the Echang Basketball Gym.

Funded by a $347,000 Taiwan Economic Stimulus Grant, the upgrades are designed to make the community facility more comfortable and usable year-round. The project added drop walls with louvers and skylights to improve natural ventilation and lighting, along with a perimeter canopy to protect players and spectators from rain and sun.

Workers also installed aluminum bleachers, movable basketball goals, chain-link gates and a full perimeter fence. Additional improvements include a concrete perimeter walkway and extended flooring, expanding space for courtside play and community activities.

Officials said the enhancements will support year-round sports, fitness and gatherings, providing a safer and more welcoming space for Echang’s youth, families and residents.
