The Palau National Archives (PNA) is now attempting to do away with the obsolete way of preserving important public records and is pushing for initiatives to adapt digitalization of files.
In an interview with Island Times on June 6, PNA Director Naomi Ngirakamerang said that they currently used micro films in the preservation of data but they are already obsolete and these have been from the Trust Territory times.
Ngirakamerang said that they had submitted a proposal to President Tommy Remengesau, Jr. in January to ask for $746,000 to be able to implement their digitalization project and digitize the copies they have for preservation.
She also said that they are planning to convert the micro films into digital copies so that they will not need micro film equipment anymore.
“The main function of the archive is to preserve important documents,” Ngirakamerang said.
Recently, according to Ngirakamerang, they had sent a letter addressed to all ministers, requesting that each ministry shall have a representative to the archives office so that they can keep track of their records. (Rhealyn C. Pojas)
