August 22, 2017 (Koror, Palau) President Tommy E. Remengesau expressed his condolences to the family of Tony de Brum and the people of the Republic of the Marshall Islands in a letter to President Hilda C. Heine on the passing of Tony de Drum, Ambassador and Foreign Minister of the Marshall Islands.
Extending sympathies on behalf of himself and First Lady Debbie Remengesau, President Remengesau expressed that “Marshall Islands has lost a son; Palau and the Pacific Family have lost a brother and the global community has lost an island champion.”
Tony de Brum is not only a well-known political figure in his country of the Marshall Islands but also in the Micronesia region and the world.
In 2016, he was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by the International Peace Bureau for filing of the landmark lawsuit against nuclear armed nations “for failing to comply with their obligations under international law to pursue negotiations for the worldwide elimination of nuclear weapons.”
He has also become an articulate voice of the island nations on issue of climate change bringing attention to it as global security risk. [/restrict]
