April 26, 2017 (Koror, Palau) “I have not seen the agreement but I assume it is a general endorsement of collaboration between Palau and Vietnam in various fields of cooperation,” expressed President Remengesau to an inquiry about the story in the news that showed Speaker of House Sabino Anastacio signing an agreement with Mekong Delta Province of Vietnam to promote fisheries and other industries in Palau. “We do have established relations with the government of Vietnam,” he added.

Adding that he does not see anything wrong with other branches of government promoting Palau in their own capacities and he had on occasions encouraged members of other branches to push for “high end” investments.

Under the Constitution the branches of government have clearly different powers and promoting Palau in their capacity is not wong.

Regarding business promotions in the People’s Republic of China made by local businessmen, President Remengesau said, “Let me make it crystal clear. Our relationship with Republic of China Taiwan does not stop us from talking with mainland China about economic investments or other areas of cooperation.”

“Palau has no enemies,” he added. “We will continue to reach out to Taiwan at all levels of cooperation.” [/restrict]
