Koror, Palau – Renee Sherman, a 15-year veteran at Airai Elementary School, has been named the 2025 Palau National Teacher of the Year, honored for her dedication to academic excellence, leadership, and deep commitment to her students and community.

Sherman, a 4th-grade homeroom teacher, teaches social studies and science to 3rd through 5th grade students, as well as career guidance and Accelerated Reading. Her journey into education began unexpectedly after she earned an associate degree in environmental and marine science from Palau Community College.

“I didn’t initially plan on becoming a teacher,” Sherman said. “But after graduating and not finding a job in my field, I applied to Airai Elementary School. I believed I could share what I knew—and I’ve never looked back.”

Since then, Sherman has become a cornerstone of her school, known not only for her teaching but also her initiative, mentorship, and drive for innovation. While teaching full-time, she earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees, underscoring her belief in lifelong learning.

“Pursuing higher education while teaching helped me grow professionally and better support my students,” she said. “It allowed me to adapt to changes in education and challenge students to think critically.”

Sherman’s impact extends far beyond the classroom. She leads school activities, coordinates academic competitions, chaperones educational trips, and was instrumental in launching Airai Elementary’s first website—a project that enhanced school communication and built stronger ties between families and educators.

“Technology plays an important role in today’s education,” she said. “Creating the school’s website was a way to help the community stay connected and informed.”

Airai Elementary School Principal Norma Mersai described Sherman as an innovator and leader whose dedication inspires both students and colleagues.

“Renee is a conqueror, a problem solver, and a passionate educator,” Mersai said. “She doesn’t work for recognition—she works to make a difference. Her compassion, professionalism, and commitment to students are what set her apart.”

Sherman also serves as a teacher team leader, mentoring colleagues, reviewing lessons, and promoting collaborative growth. “She reminds her fellow teachers to give wholeheartedly,” Mersai added, “because when you do, abundance follows.”

The Teacher of the Year selection process is rigorous. Each school nominates candidates based on qualifications such as teaching experience, professional development, community involvement, integrity, and student impact. Sherman was first selected as Airai Elementary School’s Teacher of the Year through votes cast by teachers, staff, and student officers. A comprehensive portfolio of her achievements was then submitted to the Ministry of Education’s national committee.

The national award also named two runners-up: Aleyna Ngirengkoi from Ngaraard Elementary School and Jessica Daniel from Aimeliik Elementary School.
