Accident over the weekend, 1 life lost

A road accident this weekend claimed the life of a 29-year-old man when his moped scooter hit the concrete barrier in front of the Bank of Guam around midnight Saturday night. The victim, Tai Merengor, was rushed to the hospital but unfortunately died as a result of his injuries. This is the first vehicle-related death in 2022.

After a relatively quiet Christmas and New Year, with heavy police presence on the roads, motor vehicle accidents picked up again. Late Saturday afternoon, a vehicle with 3 young passengers crashed in Aimeliik on the Compact Road near the PGI Golf Course project site.

BPS Director Aguon confirmed that two of the occupants suffered moderate injuries and were taken to the hospital. Another vehicle was reported to have overturned near the former President Remengesau’s residence in Madalaii, Koror but the driver was not injured, despite being cited for driving while intoxicated.

There were other vehicle accidents during the holidays despite heavy police presence but no serious injuries were reported. Most of the incidents involved driving while intoxicated.

Two months leading to the holidays, the Ministry of Justice led campaigns against driving while intoxicated. No statistics were available to show if there were fewer incidents this year compared to last year. There was a clear show of police presence on the roads throughout the holidays.

Minister of Justice and Vice President J. Uduch Sengebau-Senior credited the visible police presence to the participation and assistance of the 27th Police Academy cadets this year. (By: L.N. Reklai)
