7 August 2024- Australian Embassy staff have travelled as far North as Ngerchelong and continuing South to Meyuns to share the exhibition of Yiwarra Kuju: The Canning Stock Route, with elementary students.

Yiwarra Kuju “one road” is the world’s longest route for herding farm cattle and is located in Western Australia. The exhibition focuses on the many Aboriginal tribes who were directly affected by the route’s development and the exhibition depicts their stories through art.

The first week of the touring exhibition saw visits to elementary schools in Babeldoab with the second week continuing at elementary schools in Koror. Students walk through the exhibition and look at the different artworks and hear stories of the Aboriginal artists who lived in the area, during the time of the Canning Stock Route (1905 – 1959).

Students have been able to share their own stories by participating in the artwork competition. The competition allows students to draw their own route or life journey. At the end of the exhibition, the artwork will be collected from each school and will be joined to display each school’s unique story.

The school with the most unique story, will be gifted art supplies from the Australian Embassy, with the winning school to be announced.

Ms Tegan Long, a proud Alawa Aboriginal woman is assisting the Embassy showcase Yiwarra Kuju through schools and commented “It has been wonderful to see the students so engaged in the exhibition and to hear their own stories reflected in their artwork”.

The tour of the exhibition continues this week with the final exhibition being held at Meyuns Elementary School, this Friday.
