July 13, 2017- The team from Shin Kong Wu Ho-Su Memorial Hospital in the Republic of China–Taiwan recently completed its medical mission to the Republic of Palau. The 2017 Shin Kong Medical Mission to Palau focused on four (4) medical specialty areas: dermatology, nephrology, gastroenterology, and infection control diseases.

In total, more than 300 patients were seen at the specialty clinic: 224 dermatology cases, 73 gastroenterology cases, 55 nephrology cases, and 22 infection cases. In addition to providing medical consultation, the Shin Kong Doctors also conducted lectures for the continuing medical education sessions held weekly for the medical staff at the Belau National Hospital.
The doctors who joined this year’s medical mission were Dr. Kelly Thong (Dermatology), Dr. Jung-Hui Hsu (Gastroenterology),
and Dr. Chung-Kuan Wu (Nephrology). This was Dr. Thong’s fourth visit to Palau. She has been participating in the medical missions since 2015. This year, Dr. Thong also attended local outreach medical sessions to the Eastern Community Health Center (ECHC) in Melekeok and the Western Community Health Center (WCHC) in Ngaremlengui. A total of forty-four (44) dermatology patients were treated at the dispensaries in addition to other dermatology procedures.
Dr. Hsu saw 73 cases and performed 23 endoscopies with Dr. Myra Adelbai. Dr. Adelbai is a local doctor who recently completed a medical training in Taiwan. Dr. Wu reviewed all the treatment procedures for patients under hemodialysis with the assistance of Nurse Yu-Ting Chen. Dr. Hsu and Dr. Wu also performed 66 echo exams using the ultrasound machine that was donated by Shin Kong Wu Ho-Su Memorial Hospital two years ago.
In addition to the medical team, Shin Kong Wu Ho-Su Memorial Hospital also sent its Infection Control Department Chief, Dr. Chien-Hsien Huang, to assist with Palau’s Dengue Fever prevention efforts. Dr. Huang provided consultation regarding other infectious diseases.
The medical mission team donated items to the Belau National Hospital including dermatology medications, training tools, double-lumen catheters, tonics for hemodialysis patients, mosquito swatters, mosquito nets, Dengue prevention posters, and Dengue prevention cards.
A farewell dinner was hosted for the 2017 Shin Kong Medical Mission Doctors on June 27, 2017 courtesy of the 10th Olbiil Era Kelulau (OEK) Senate President Hokkons Baules, 10th OEK Speaker of the House of Delegates Sabino Anastacio, 10th OEK Senator John Skebong, and Ngiwal State Governor Ellender Ngirameketii. The dinner held at Fuji Restaurant was a small token of appreciation from the Republic of Palau to Shin Kong Wu Ho-Su Memorial Hospital for its continued support in medical services and assistance.
The 2017 Shin Kong Medical Mission was made possible through the collaborative efforts of the Republic of Palau Ministry
of Health (MOH) and the Taiwan Medical Program (TMP) with the Shin Kong Wu Ho-Su Memorial Hospital. TMP is sponsored through a grant from the Government of the Republic of China–Taiwan.
