Overview:
When the day finally ends but your mind refuses to rest, the struggle isn’t just stress — it may be your nervous system working overtime. In this personal reflection, the writer explores the burden of overthinking, the science behind the restless mind, and the peace they found through faith and surrender.
Have you ever noticed this?
You finally lie down to rest…
And suddenly your brain turns into a 24/7 overthinking machine.
Replaying conversations.
Predicting worst-case scenarios.
Getting stuck in “what if” loops about things that haven’t even happened.
And you think:
Why can’t I just turn this off?
Here’s something most people don’t know:
Overthinking isn’t a personality flaw. It’s a nervous system pattern.
When your brain senses uncertainty, emotional risk, or possible rejection, your amygdala (your threat detector) switches on.
And once it’s on, it starts scanning for problems.
Overthinking is just your brain trying to keep you safe —but it’s actually working harder than it needs to.
When I became a follower of Christ Jesus I asked him. “LORD I do not exactly know my burdens you mention Matthew 11:28?” I was very ignorant. I turned off the lights and tried but sleep won’t come. Like a flood light I saw it. GOD my burden is overthinking. I need to sleep. When I opened my eyes it was morning. WOW! Thank you LORD I slept well.
Psalm 4:8, which says “I will both lie down in peace, and sleep; For You alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.”
