KOROR, Palau (Jan. 29, 2026) — Palau’s emergency response capacity received a boost Thursday with the delivery of two new ambulances and K9 support packs donated by the United States government.

President Surangel S. Whipps Jr., Justice Minister Jennifer S. Olegeriil, U.S. Ambassador Joel Ehrendreich and Bureau of Public Safety Director Curtis Elobt joined police officers, firefighters and emergency medical technicians at the Palau Fire Station in Koror for the handover ceremony.
The Ministry of Justice received two fully equipped Ford F-350 ambulances, enhanced sustainment packs to support ongoing maintenance, and K9 support packs. The new assets are intended to strengthen frontline emergency response and improve the Division of Fire and Rescue’s ability to respond to ambulance calls across the country.
President Whipps thanked Ambassador Ehrendreich and the U.S. government for their continued partnership with Palau, noting that the new ambulances will complement the country’s existing emergency response fleet.
Also attending the ceremony were U.S. Navy Lt. Cmdr. Chris Lelah, representing the U.S. government, and all Bureau of Public Safety division chiefs, who accompanied Division of Fire and Rescue Chief Jefferson Eriich, firefighters and EMTs.
The ambulances and support equipment were provided by the United States under Section 333 of the Compact of Free Association, through the “Building Partner Capacity” program. The donation was facilitated through discussions held during recent Joint Committee Meetings between Palau and the United States on defense and policy matters.
Minister Olegeriil expressed appreciation for the longstanding partnership between Palau and the United States, saying the new ambulances and support packs will significantly enhance the Division of Fire and Rescue’s capacity to protect communities. She also thanked the U.S. government for its continued support in the development and sustainment of Palau’s K9 Unit and its operations.
