Event Highlights UN Programs, Inspires Future Changemakers

Koror, Palau — On October 24, 2024, the United Nations in Palau hosted its first-ever UN Day Open House, focusing on empowering young journalists from the Palau Media Council. The event aimed to equip them with a deeper understanding of the UN’s role in Palau and encourage their efforts to report on local and global issues, reinforcing their position as changemakers in their communities.

Held at the UNDP GEF SGP Conference Room, the open house featured presentations from representatives of seven key UN agencies. They discussed a range of topics, from food security to digital governance, demonstrating how UN programs contribute to Palau’s sustainable development.

Interactive Learning for Young Journalists

The event provided an opportunity for youth journalists to engage directly with UN personnel and learn about specific projects and initiatives. The agencies represented included:

  • Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO): FAO National Project Specialist Jodean Remengesau highlighted efforts to enhance food security and promote sustainable agriculture in Palau.
  • International Organization for Migration (IOM): Yohan Senarath, Head of IOM in Palau reported projects in Palau on migration management and disaster risk reduction.
  • United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD): Mr. Mohammed Rizwan Khan presented its ASYCUDA Program to streamline Palau’s customs processes and improve trade.
  • Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme (GEF SGP): Ms. Shirley Koshiba, GEF SGP showcased community-based environmental projects addressing biodiversity, climate change, and sustainable livelihoods.
  • Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP): Mr. Uong James Yalap outlined efforts to help Palau track its progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
  • United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS): Ms. Eleanor Ngerchelei Titiml  discussed digital transformation projects aimed at improving governance and service delivery.

Encouraging Media’s Role in Social Change

In a virtual address, UN Resident Coordinator Jaap van Hierden emphasized the critical role of youth journalists in influencing public opinion and driving social progress. He urged them to focus on stories that amplify marginalized voices and promote positive change, highlighting the media’s power to shape public discourse.

Fostering Collaboration and Transparency

The event concluded with an interactive Q&A session, allowing journalists to explore how UN initiatives impact Palau’s communities and contribute to regional and global goals. The session reinforced the UN’s commitment to transparency and collaboration with local media.
