June 14, 2017 (Koror, Palau) 2017 Belau Games will proceed as scheduled despite request from Governors’ Association to delay the event. Citing the Dengue epidemic and the forecasted severe drought, 14 out of 16 Governors requested the Ministry of Community & Cultural Affairs and Palau National Olympic Committee to delay the games.

President Remengesau in his weekly press conference stated that he hoped that the Governors would reconsider their request to postpone the Belau Games.

“Let’s work to overcome challenges rather than cowering from them,” exhorted Remengesau. He reiterated that Palau should not easily succumb to challenges but should push through despite those challenges.

Ministry of Health will use this opportunity to double its effort to educate communities and combat the dengue outbreak. In addition, MOH will test all the athletes prior to the games for dengue virus.

“Let’s not step backward but continue forward despite challenges,” urged President Remengesau. [/restrict]
