Koror, Palau – In 2022, co-founders Benina Berger and Tati launched the AD HOC Art Center, a local non-governmental organization (NGO). AD HOC provides a space for artists and experienced art enthusiasts to lead art events for children, teens, and adults.

The center, currently located at Urur Labs courtesy of PCC, aligns with Berger’s background in art, music, and dance. Berger, who also serves as AD HOC’s president, is connected with the Belau National Museum. The name “AD HOC” reflects the Latin meaning of “creation out of basic necessity,” emphasizing the inherent need for art creation. Berger highlights the inspirational nature of art’s spontaneous character.

Mirroring their name, the AD HOC team prioritizes collaborative art creation and sharing. They are enthusiastic about the growing appreciation for art within the Palauan community.

Weekly Events Cater to Diverse Audiences

AD HOC offers a variety of art experiences, including performing arts, applied arts, and visual arts. Their weekly events take place on Tuesdays at 6:00 PM, catering to different age groups each session.

In June, events included star straw designs for all ages (facilitated by AD HOC’s Lorraine) and lei leaf crocheting for teens and adults (facilitated by Jennifer). On June 18th, Henry led a Tapa art workshop for adults, introducing participants to traditional Samoan art and culture. Attendees enjoyed learning a new skill, creating their own Tapa paintings, and fostering community connections. The event evoked childhood artistic memories for some participants.

Limited Spots, Personalized Instruction

The final June event, scheduled for June 25th, is a kid’s acrylic painting session led by Miel. Limited to ten participants, registration can be done via Facebook messenger by expressing interest. A $5 sign-up fee covers art supplies.

During events, facilitators prioritize building meaningful connections with participants. The limited number of attendees allows for personalized guidance and exploration of individual artistic styles, rather than copying established works.

Seeking Support, Volunteers

Moving forward, AD HOC seeks support to maintain art supplies and provide transportation assistance for facilitators and assistants. The organization welcomes individuals passionate about art and sharing it with others to join their team as facilitators or assistants. Contact can be made through Facebook messenger or email (info@adhoccenter.com).

The positive feedback from parents who wish their children had similar opportunities and participants who enjoy exploring new creative outlets motivates AD HOC. Their events also raise awareness of art as a viable career path. AD HOC looks forward to continuing to offer engaging art experiences for the community.
