(Koror, Palau ) In the spirit of Mother’s Day, the Ngarayolt women’s group of Aimeliik State donated food supplies to inmates at the Koror Jail on May 8, 2024.
“Ng reng ra klechedil!. Even though bad decisions brought them here, these are still our children, nephews, and uncles,” said Ebil Hermana Umetaro, an elder member of Ngarayolt, of their decision to donate food to the inmates. “They have mothers who love them, and with this small gift of food, we want them to remember that they have mothers and people who care about them.”
The donation, consisting of 10 cases of chicken, 10 sacks of rice, and various condiments, aims to supplement meals for the inmates.
Vice President and Minister of Justice Uduch Sengebau-Senior expressed appreciation for the gesture, noting the timely coincidence with Mother’s Day on May 12th. She also highlighted that the date marks the beginning of Police Awareness Week.
“This coming Awareness Week will highlight the contributions and sacrifices police officers make to ensure peace and security,” Sengebau-Senior said. “It will also be a time to express appreciation for their commitment.”
Director of the Division of Correction Ricky Ngiraked echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the importance of remembering the inmates’ humanity.
“At the end of the day,” Ngiraked said, “we have to remember that these inmates are also our children, nephews, nieces, cousins, and relatives.”
