On December 3, 2019 a workshop for an alternate wastewater system known as the Kubota Johkasou Wastewater Treatment systems was conducted at Palau Community College Assembly Hall. This workshop was made possible due to the collaborative efforts of the Palau Environmental Quality Protection Board (EQPB), Palau Visitors Authority (PVA), and Koror State Government Solid Waste Management Office. About sixty (60) building contractors and state office representatives were able to attend this workshop which provided information about the Kubota Johkasou system, as well as details on the operation and maintenance of these systems.

This product is made by Kubota Corporation Ltd., a Japan-based company, whose representative Mr. Wataru Yokoyama, provided information about its procurement, installation, operation and maintenance. Accompanying him was Mr. Keiichi Tsukamoto of NBK Corporation, a distributor of the Johkasou system. Kubota offers a wide range of products appropriate for small residences to large hotel developments. Currently, several of these systems are already installed in Palau for both residential and commercial entities. , and it is Kubota Company’s best interest to ensure that these systems operate in the optimal manner so as a result, there is no discharge of untreated wastewater to Palau’s pristine environment.

The Kubota Johkasou Wastewater Treatment System is a technologically advanced method of treating wastewater effluent in areas without public sewer infrastructure. In Palau, septic tanks have traditionally been constructed out of concrete, and may harm surrounding ground water if not constructed properly. However, Kubota’s Johkasou system which undergoes a thorough quality control process boasts a biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) removal rate of 5 times more than the traditional system, indicating that the effluent is adequately treated. It is Kubota Company’s belief that using their systems contributes to cleaner more information can be found on online at www.kubota.co.jp or www.kubota-global.net/index.html.

EQPB Engineer Dr. Peter Peshut was available to answer questions about wastewater treatment and these systems for the attending contractors. For more information, or digital copies of their presentations, please contact Dr. Peshut or Compliance Specialist Ms. Zena Kulie Rengulbai at the EQPB Office at 488-3600.

As a continuation of education specifically for building contractors, EQPB will be holding a training workshop to familiarize contractors with the newly revised Wastewater Treatment and Disposal Regulations on December 11-12, 2019. Please contact Ms. Rengulbai if you are interested in joining this workshop.
