Ann Kloulechad-Singeo is the first person to declare her bid for a seat in the Palau National Congress (Olbiil Era Kelulau) in the upcoming 2024 general election. She is also the first woman to do so.
The announcement was made during a talk show at the TMC (Talungab Media Production) program of Klausisechakl yesterday, October 5, 2023.
Singeo is a founding member and Managing Director of Ebiil Society, a non-profit organization that promotes environmental education and conservation. She strongly advocates teaching young people about the environment through science and traditional knowledge.
Singeo is no stranger to national elections. She ran for the first time for a Senate seat in 2022 but lost to Senator Salvador Tellames. However, she remained committed to effecting change as a woman in the congress.
Singeo’s decision to run for office is inspired by Senator Rukebai Inabo, who encouraged women to run for Congress to help pass legislation that is of importance to women, such as maternity leave. Singeo has said that she believes that women’s voices need to be heard in the Palau National Congress.
“They asked me if I was running, and my answer is yes!” expressed Mrs. Ann Kloulechad Singeo in response to the women at the Mechesil Belau Conference this week.
Singeo’s candidacy is a significant step forward for women’s representation in national congress. Currently, only two women are in the Palau National Congress, Senator Rukebai Inabo and Delegate Vicky Kanai.
