3 December 2024– His Excellency Surangel Whipps Jr, several senior government members, humanitarian agencies and media were invited aboard the Australian Defence Vessel (ADV) Reliant on Tuesday 26 November.
The ADV Reliant bolsters Australia’s capacity to provide support to Pacific Island countries and to respond quickly in times of crisis. Australia works closely with the Pacific to prepare for regional challenges which necessitate a need for greater climate resilience and heightened demand for disaster relief capabilities.

The ADV Reliant is capable of delivering humanitarian assistance, training, search and rescue, maritime surveillance, hydrography support, among others. It is 102m long and has a large cargo deck, heavy duty crane, two shallow-bottomed landing craft and can produce thousands of litres of fresh water a day to provide targeted and effective support.
On ADV Reliant’s inaugural visit to Palau, she transported equipment for Palau Athletics in support of the 2025 Mini Games and gym equipment for the Division of Maritime Security and Fish & Wildlife Protection.

ADV Reliant will have a sustained presence in the Pacific to enhance Australia’s support and meet the needs of Pacific partners. Ambassador Richelle Turner said, “ADV Reliant augments Australia’s considerable disaster response options and tangibly demonstrates Australia’s commitment to enhancing resilience, security and wellbeing across the Pacific.”
On 26 November, representatives from traditional leadership, across government, NGO sector, diplomatic corps also joined the Australian Embassy and community for an Aussie style BBQ. Thank you for all who attended in celebration of our 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations.
