27 October 2023– To the delight of grade 7 and 8 students at the Koror Elementary School last week, the Australian Embassy and Stay Staunch Gym ran touch football, a variation of rugby league, skills workshops.
The sport of rugby league is fast paced, requires skill and determination, and is extremely popular across the Pacific. Under the instruction of coach Mr Clint Moore, the students took to the sport quickly; learning the basics of attacking and defensive manoeuvres before forming two teams and playing a game of non-contact touch football. The students all enjoyed the new sport and were happy to receive a goodie bag from the Embassy with PacificAusSports merchandise after the match.
The Embassy will run similar workshops at George B Harris Elementary School and Melekeok Elementary School this week.
Stay Staunch Gym also runs a weekly 1-hour touch football training session on Tuesdays from 5:30pm at the Emmaus-Bethania High School (EBHS). All are welcome to join. For more information, please contact Mr Clint Moore of Stay Staunch Gym.
The school workshops, supported by the Ministry of Education, coincide with the Pacific Rugby League Championships (14 October – 5 November). Australia has contributed more than AUD7 million of support over two years to this new competition, which showcases elite-level Pacific rugby league, played in the Pacific, for a Pacific audience. To celebrate, the Australian Embassy and Stay Staunch Gym invite the community to join us at Kramer’s Bar & Restaurant Sunday 5 November at 2pm to watch the Pacific Bowl final live from Port Moresby on the big screen. There will be prizes, snacks and plenty of rugby!
