Koror State’s highest ranking female traditional leader, Bilung Gloria Salii, fined Lisa Sandei and her family and Kerai Ngirmekur and his family yesterday for the video that was leaked to netizens via Messenger app, a  free mobile messaging app used to do instant messaging, sharing of videos, photos, audio and group chats.

Earlier this week, a private video of the couple that they took while engaging in an intimate act, was accidently sent out and was leaked publicly via Messenger without their consent.  The video spread quickly sparking backlash and debate around Palauan communities in Palau and abroad.

Yesterday, Ms. Sandei, her mother and relatives went to see Bilung and paid a fine of $2,000, including one large toluk (turtle shell money), and a Palauan money of high value (delibachel mengungau) for the incident.

On the same day, Mr. Ngirmekur also went to see Bilung and paid a fine of $1,000.

Both parties apologized openly for the incident, vowing not to commit similar act again even though the video was released without their consent. (L.N. Reklai)
