September 13, 2023- Dr. Glenda M. Santos, a surgeon from the Belau National Hospital, recently participated in a surgical training workshop hosted at the Gardens Point Campus of the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) in Brisbane, Australia. The training focused on trauma, orthopedic surgery, and burns infection management. Participants also learned about the latest standards of treatment, current concepts of emerging medical technologies, and researches on topics such as trauma and periprosthetic & fracture-related infections. The workshop was held from August 29- 30, 2023. It was conducted by the Jamison Trauma Institute in collaboration with the Pro-Implant Foundation and the Queensland University of Technology.

Funding for the training was provided by the St. Vincent’s Pacific Health Fund (SVPH Fund) and the Pacific Community SPC. The SVPH Fund was established by Dr Andrew Dent in 2008 to improve health services and medical education resources in the Pacific region. The Pacific Community SPC is an international development organization governed by 27 members, including 22 Pacific island countries and territories around the Pacific Ocean. It supports sustainable development by applying a people-centered approach to science, research and technology across all of the sustainable development goals.

In total, seven (7) health care professionals from the islands of Palau, American Samoa, Fiji, Kiribati, and the Cook islands participated in the surgical training workshop.
