Improving the morale of healthcare workers is a top priority for Vice President Raynold “Arnold” Oilouch after officially taking over leadership of the Ministry of Health & Human Services (MHHS) on January 22.
“There are ongoing priorities of the Ministry of Health, such as ensuring the delivery of medical services to the public. However, based on my meetings with various hospital departments and the MHHS transition report citing a high employee turnover rate, I believe one of the main issues to address is boosting employee morale, particularly among nurses,” Oilouch said in an interview.
Acknowledging the dedication of healthcare workers, he added, “I know they are capable and know their jobs well, but they will perform even better in an improved atmosphere.”
Oilouch has already begun visiting different MHHS departments and meeting staff to gain a deeper understanding of the hospital’s needs. “A kdirk mlo soiseb (I just got in), and I am already working,” he said.
Oilouch’s appointment to the health ministry was confirmed through a memo released Wednesday, ending a week of speculation. Initially, President Surangel Whipps Jr. had indicated that Oilouch would head the Ministry of Justice, a position widely anticipated for the vice president after Whipps’ announcement last year.
However, the president did not include a nomination for the MHHS portfolio in his ministerial appointments following the January 16 inauguration, leading to rumors of a last-minute reassignment.
When asked about the unexpected shift, Oilouch deferred to the president’s judgment. “As to why I was appointed to MHHS, that is a question for the president. During my campaign, I stated that I would serve wherever the president deemed fit, and I will do my best. He has appointed me to the Ministry of Health, and I’ll give it my all,” he assured.
Oilouch’s appointment comes at a time when the MHHS is grappling with workforce challenges, including retention and morale issues among healthcare staff. He pledges his leadership will focus on creating a supportive environment to ensure the ministry can better serve the community.
