According to data from Palau’s Cancer Registry covering 2007 to 2023, cancer remains a significant public health challenge. The registry shows that 58% of cancer cases in Palau are related to tobacco use, while 24% are linked to obesity, two largely preventable risk factors.

Health officials report that 60% of people diagnosed with cancer in Palau die within five years of diagnosis, underscoring the importance of prevention, screening and timely treatment. However, the data also indicate that about 28% of adults, if diagnosed early, can be successfully treated, highlighting the lifesaving potential of early detection.

The proclamation calls on the public, government agencies and community organizations to increase awareness, promote education and encourage Palauans to take responsibility for reducing their cancer risk.

President Whipps said the statistics make clear that healthier choices can significantly lower the likelihood of developing cancer.

“Based on the statistics and reports on the causes of cancer, changing bad habits can result in healthier people,” Whipps said. “We know that obesity can contribute to cancer, so we can manage this.”

Health officials emphasize that adopting healthier lifestyles — including quitting tobacco, maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly and seeking early medical screenings — can reduce cancer risk and improve survival rates.

Cancer Awareness Month activities throughout February aim to reinforce these messages, promote prevention and encourage Palauans to seek timely care and support.
