Palau launched its Citizen’s Budget (CB) program on Wednesday at the 2024 Palau Development Symposium. The initiative aims to simplify the national budget, making it more accessible and easier to understand for all citizens.
The Citizen’s Budget is a visually engaging, short document that offers a clear overview of Palau’s annual national budget. It breaks down budget allocations, revenue sources, and key priorities in plain language, removing the technical jargon typically associated with financial documents.
Georgina Conway, Palau’s Country Economist, presented the program, highlighting its goals of increasing transparency, enhancing citizen involvement, and improving accountability in government spending.
“This is one of the best initiatives I’ve seen come from the government,” said one attendee at the launch.
Tax Director Elway Ikeda confirmed that the program would be updated annually and made available online, providing citizens with an ongoing tool to understand how the national budget is allocated and spent.
