The Civic Action Team (CAT) Palau, in partnership with the Palau Athletics Federation and the Ministry of Health’s Diabetes Prevention Unit, hosted a highly successful Turkey Trot 5K last week at Ernguul Park, drawing more than 250 runners, walkers, and families from across the community.

“The turnout was incredible, and it was wonderful to see the community active and engaged,” said Capt. Jon Furlong, the Civic Action Team Officer in Charge. “Our team was thankful for the chance to share an American Thanksgiving tradition with the people of Palau while also promoting health and fitness.”  he shares.  The Turkey Trot, modeled after traditional U.S. Thanksgiving 5K races, featured a unique highlight when CAT member SPC Leeosheon Jarrett ran the course in a full-body turkey costume. The first three runners to catch the “turkey” received Thanksgiving pies.

The first to catch SPC Jarrett—who also finished as the top three overall were Kraven Ngirchomlei (1st place), Righteous Adaba (2nd place), and Garrett Welge (3rd place).

The event was organized by Staff Sergeant JD Mwiseneza, who noted the positive community response. “Organizing the Turkey Trot was a lot of fun. Seeing the community come together, laugh, and enjoy the challenge made all the planning worth it,” he said.

In addition to the race, health information was provided through the Ministry of Health’s Diabetes Prevention Unit. CAT Doctor Rebecca Sainato emphasized the importance of early detection. “Diabetes is a condition that often goes unnoticed until it becomes serious, which is why knowing the early signs—such as increased thirst, frequent urination, fatigue, or blurred vision—is so important,” she said. She added that adults in Palau, particularly those over age 35, are encouraged to undergo regular blood sugar screenings.

CAT Palau expressed appreciation to event sponsors Palau Royal Resort, WCTC, Surangel & Sons, and Globus for their support. The team also acknowledged the assistance of Palau Athletics for race timing and management, as well as the Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) Response Unit for co-hosting the event.

According to organizers, the Turkey Trot aims to promote community wellness and strengthen ongoing cooperation between the United States and Palau through civic engagement and health-focused activities.
