Koror, Palau – The Palau Sport Fishing Association (PSFA) proudly hosted the 2025 Melekeok State Constitutional & Memorial Day Derby this past weekend,

bringing together anglers, families, and fishing enthusiasts for a day of celebration on the water.

This year’s derby delivered excitement from start to finish. Team Taber, captained by Telly Thomas, secured the top prize with an impressive 42-pound barracuda, earning them the $1,000 first-place award.

Adding to the momentum, Team Omenged 25, captained by Clint Madracheluib, claimed the Marlin Pot, breaking Team Melairei 2’s long-running winning streak. Their marlin weighed in at a remarkable 214.5 pounds, making it one of the standout catches of the event earning them $1,400.

While the competition was fierce, the ocean delivered its own surprises—no tuna were landed again this year, leaving the tuna prize unclaimed. Conditions on Saturday kept anglers on their toes: it was a warm day with light winds, and a brief rain shower swept through before clearing just as quickly. Even with shifting weather and no tuna in the coolers, the derby showcased the true spirit of sport fishing—every trip is unpredictable, every catch hard-earned, and the ocean always has the last word.

Beyond the trophies and leaderboard, events like this derby play a vital role in strengthening Palau’s fishing community. They expose young people and aspiring anglers to new techniques, equipment, and opportunities within sport fishing. With proper training and support, these experiences can lead to future careers as captains, guides, and professionals in a growing sport fishing tourism industry.

PSFA extends its warm congratulations to all the winners, and its deepest appreciation to every participant, sponsor, volunteer, and to the community of Melekeok for their hospitality and dedication to keeping Palau’s fishing heritage strong. Mark your calendars: the next Derby is January 17 in Ngatpang!
